Floral cushion-cross stitch design

Floral cushion-cross stitch design- Polka dot fabric is the perfect backdrop for these elegant summer flowers, which take pride of place on this country-style cushion, blooming with style.

Comfy, homely and pretty are the words that spring to mind when we look at this lovely cushion. The roses have a wonderful shabby chic feel to them, and the spotty linen brings the piece to life. If you don’t want to opt for patterned fabric, complete the whole chart, including the dots, using coloured linen instead. Just picture the finished cushion in a country cottage, resting against an old armchair or a classic wicker seat like the one in the picture. If you like simple projects then you’ll love this easy design, which has a very modest palette and uses just whole stitches throughout.

You will need:

Threads: Stranded cotton as listed in the key

Needle:Size 26 tapestry needle

Fabric:28-count evenweave or 32-count Belfast linen in natural and white dot

Extras:Backing fabric of your choice; cushion pad to fit

How to make up the rose cushion

1.If you’re using polka dot linen, cut two pieces of backing fabric measuring 37x20cm (141/2x8in) for the envelope-opening back panel. Machine-stitch a 2cm (3/4in) double hem along one long edge of each piece, and press.

2.With the right sides facing, pin one panel at the top of the cushion and one at the bottom. Pin around the edge and stitch with a 2cm (3/4in) seam, then trim the corners, turn the cover through and press. Insert cushion pad to finish.

3. If you’re using coloured evenweave, trim your stitched piece so that it measures 30x30cm (12x12in), making sure that the design is central. Cut two pieces of backing fabric measuring 30x18cm (14x7in) for the envelope-opening back panel. Machine-stitch a 2cm (3/4in) double hem along one long edge of each piece, and press.

4.Finish the cushion according to step 2. Your cushion will be smaller than the one using polka dot linen due to the design areas of the pattern. If you’d prefer it to be the same size, just extend the polka dots in the background until you achieve the desired dimensions.
