These three motifs for **napkin rings and napkins -free cross-stitch patterns** are taken from a woven South American sash belt . When you first look at the belt, the designs are not obvious, but on closer inspection you can see owls, a tropical bird of some kind and maize plants, intermingled with the woven pattern of the belt itself.

A disigner has used the owls as a motif for the *napkin ring*, while the maize and bird designs appear on the *napkins*, You could add these two to the corners of a tablecloth as well, or use them on square coasters. Try repeating the owl design horizontally on a coffee pot warmer or tea cosy, or to make a cafe curtain border.

**Measurements**

Worked on 14 count Aida, the finished owl embroidery measures 14 x 5.5cm (5J£ x 2Min), the maize 6 x 8cm (236 x 3’/in) and the bird 7 x 6.7cm (2%x2%in). Use 2 strands of cotton in the needle throughout.
