Cushions: patterns for needlework with charming cats
This striking set of four cushions was initially inspired by the colourful traditional patchwork patterns often used for cushions. I thought it would be very  effective to show the cats against these pretty backgrounds.
MATERIALS (for each cushion patterns for needlework with  cats)
• 10 count double-thread canvas 48.5cm square
•Contrasting backing fabric 40.5cm square (of a similar weight to the finished needlepoint)
• DMC tapestry wool as shown on the chart
•Tapestry needle size 18
• Matching sewing thread •Cushion pad 35.5cm  square
•Cord and tassels to trim if required
Finished size:34cm  square
1 Mount the canvas in a frame . Following the appropriate chart, stitch the design centrally on the canvas.
2 Once the needlepoint is complete, trim away the excess canvas, leaving a 2.5cm  border of unworked canvas all round.
3 Place the needlepoint and backing fabric together, right sides facing, and machine stitch around three sides, stitching as close as
possible to the worked area.
4 Snip off any excess canvas across the corners, press the seams open and turn right side out.
5 Insert the cushion pad. then turn in the canvas and backing at the open end and slipstitch neatly together, level with the edge of the needlepoint. Sew braided cord or piping neatly around the edge, adding tassels to the corners if you wish.
